Firstly, Happy New Year! And I hope you all had a prosperous and happy 2014.
So, update... Last year I did it - I finished my book and I was really proud of my work. My test readers came back with nothing but positive comments and the odd typo, so I was a very happy bunny. I started down the traditional publishing path aiming at gaining agent representation, but that's where I hit a bit of a snag. I got what is playfully called in the trade 'rave rejections'... Apparently my work is good and my novel well written, but the market is not there for the type of book I had written. Ah, I appear to have missed the boat on the action thriller trend.
So now what?
Well I did receive some lovely comments from agents, one in particular, and that really cheered me up. Ok, I hadn't achieved the representation I was after, but I had gained approval. I was buoyed by the positive feedback and took a little breather to decide what to do.
I can't magic up demand in the market, so I'll pop my thriller on the back burner for now and keep an eye out for a change in the tides. Meanwhile, I need to keep writing, so what's the plan there? - A fresh perspective! And not just in my writing but all aspects of my life.
Last year I took the decision to leave my day job and become self-employed, which has given me a lot more freedom. I thought long and hard about my new project and decided to try the other genre of books that I love to read; Urban Fantasy. I thought about my areas of expertise and the things that I am passionate about and have rolled them all into a new idea, a new series of books and have begun writing again.
I'm very enthusiastic about my new project and I hope that it is unique enough and an intriguing enough concept to capture people's imaginations and interest. I'll keep you posted on how it develops!
Wish me luck and watch this space ;)
